Zone 2 Training, Explained Without the Jargon

The easiest workouts might be the ones making you fittest. Here is why zone 2 matters.

Zone 2 has become a buzzword, from marathon plans to longevity podcasts. Strip away the hype and the idea is simple: a lot of easy training makes you fitter.

What zone 2 is

Heart-rate training is usually split into five zones, from very easy to all-out. Zone 2 is the second one: a steady, comfortable effort you could keep up for a long time.

A simple check is the talk test. In zone 2 you can speak in full sentences, but you would rather not sing.

Why it works

Easy aerobic training builds the engine behind all endurance: a stronger heart, more blood vessels in your muscles, and muscles that are better at using fat for fuel.

Because it is gentle, you can do a lot of it and still recover for the harder sessions that matter.

How much of your training should be easy

Studies of elite endurance athletes keep finding the same pattern: the large majority of their training is easy, and only a small part is hard.

Many recreational athletes do the opposite. They train in a comfortably hard middle that is too hard to recover from and too easy to build real speed.

How to find your zone 2

Your zones depend on your maximum and resting heart rate, so they are different for everyone. Our free calculator works them out in seconds, and inbeat sets them for you from your own data.

Common mistakes

A few things trip up almost everyone at first:

  • Letting pace decide instead of heart rate, especially on hills or hot days
  • Turning every easy run into a tempo run
  • Giving up because it feels too slow in the first weeks

Zone 2 isn’t exciting, and that is the point. Slow down, be patient for a few weeks, and you will likely find your easy pace getting quicker at the same heart rate.
